Johannesburg - Gauteng residents are becoming increasingly tolerant of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, queer and other sexual orientations (LGBTIAQ+), a survey revealed on Thursday.
Seventy-one percent of the 27 493 respondents believed that the LGBTIAQ+ community deserved equal rights, Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) executive director Professor David Everatt said.
“Thirty-seven percent strongly believe that homosexuality is against the values of their community while 56 percent disagree that it is against the values of their community,” said Everatt in a statement.
He released the results of a survey conducted on the quality of life in Gauteng at the University of the Witwatersrand on Thursday.
The survey was conducted by the GCRO, a partnership between the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, the Gauteng provincial government and the SA Local Government Association.
It also covered areas of race, government issues, transport, jobs, violence against women, poverty and protests.
