Johannesburg - Cabinet members who attended a Gupta family wedding at Sun City, North West, last week did so in their personal capacity, government said on Thursday.

“Several ministers were invited to attend the Gupta family wedding in their personal capacity. Some ministers attended the wedding while others did not attend,” acting government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said in a statement.

Members of the executive frequently interacted with fellow South Africans on official and social events, she said.

A chartered Gupta family jet carrying 270 wedding guests landed at the Waterkloof Air Force Base last week. Guests were attending the wedding of Vega Gupta, 23, and Indian-born Aakash Jahajgarhia at Sun City. The landing at a national key point sparked widespread criticism.

A committee of directors general was appointed to investigate the matter and given seven days to complete the probe and report back to Cabinet.

Williams said: “Government appeals to all media houses, journalists, and opinion makers to respect the investigation period and allow due processes to be followed.” - Sapa
