Johannesburg - Former Wits lecturer Dr Last Moyo, one of two officials fired last week after an internal investigation found them guilty of sexual harassment, says he will challenge his dismissal.

Moyo, a former senior lecturer in media studies, was charged for violating the university’s student and staff relations policy and faced two counts of sexual harassment.

The one case involved a poem that Moyo had sent to a colleague, who replied it was suggestive and made her feel uncomfortable.

“I immediately… went to her office to apologise. She accepted the apology…” he said.

Moyo said other instances in which he had been charged with sexual harassment related to him requesting one of his students to be a friend on Facebook and BBM, and Facebook correspondence with another student.

Moyo said the student to whom he had sent the Facebook friend request had told him she had been uncomfortable with the idea, so she had declined. He had accepted it.

On the charge over BBM and Facebook chats, Moyo said the student, who he said had sent him a Facebook friend request, had alleged that he’d harassed her through their correspondence.

He said that when the student had been asked for proof of it, she said she’d deleted it.

Moyo denied harassing any of the accused and said he would challenge his dismissal through the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration.
