Johannesburg - Former 400m hurdles champion Llewellyn Herbert, who is a staff member at a Benoni school, is being investigated by the school governing body (SGB) after photos of him holding a CD cover with two white lines of powder surfaced recently.

The matter has been reported to the Gauteng Education Department.

Chairman of Brandwag High School SGB Reverend Hendrik Claassen said the school had instituted disciplinary proceedings and issued Herbert with a warning letter, but had found no evidence against him during the investigations.

Photos on social media of the athlete posing semi-nude were also reported to the school.

Herbert, who is an athletics coach and the head of discipline at the school, allegedly said the photos were taken before he was hired by the school last year.

“We have reported it to the Department of Basic Education. We also reported it to Child Protection, but they didn’t take it further,” said Claassen.

“If there are any other complaints we will investigate them.”

He said Herbert was made to take a drug test, which had come out negative.

Gauteng Education Department spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said the department was aware of the matter.

“Mr Herbert is not an employee of the department, but is employed by the school governing body. The SGB, as his employer, is dealing with this matter,” she said.

Herbert won a silver medal at the World Championships in Athens in 1997 and a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.
