Johannesburg - A man was killed after a truck tyre exploded in his face on a highway near Fochville, Gauteng, ER24 paramedics said.

The incident happened on Friday night on the R54 near Fochville.

ER24 said its paramedics arrived on scene and found the patient lying in a pool of blood next to the truck.

“On assessment, paramedics found that the patient had sustained severe injuries to his head and legs and was in a critical condition,” ER24 said.

“Paramedics began their treatment as well as providing the patient with advanced life support interventions. After treatment was complete, the patient was transported to Mediclinic Potchefstroom for further treatment.

“Unfortunately the patient succumbed to his injuries in hospital and was declared dead.”

It is understood the man was changing the truck tyre when it exploded, causing the tire rim to strike the man in the skull.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
