Johannesburg - A 40-year-old man was killed by a train in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday night when he walked on the railway line, probably to avoid Masakane Road, which was flooded.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesman William Ntladi told The Star on Thursday morning that the bridge and the road were impassable because of the heavy rains. He said the man, who has not yet been identified, decided to walk on the railway line to get to his destination.

“It appears he did not hear the train approach from behind him, and he was killed instantly. However, no other injuries have been reported due to flooding,” he said.

All the roads around Katlehong have been reopened and are operating normally on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, there was chaos in the area, especially in Heidelberg Road, which was flooded.

The SA Weather Service said this morning there was a 60 percent chance of rain on Thursday, and a 30 percent chance on Friday and Saturday.

“Another system is approaching and increased rains are expected again on Sunday,” said forecaster Elizabeth Webster.

However, she warned Gauteng holiday-makers heading to KwaZulu-Natal that heavy rains were expected in the province on Monday.
