Johannesburg - Melville residents were shocked after a well-known vagrant known as ‘Ten Cents’ was found dead on the pavement in their suburb.

Passers-by found him on Monday and notified the police and paramedics, who confirmed he was dead.

The homeless man’s body was discovered on the pavement outside one of the houses.

He was covered in an old orange duvet. One of his shoes was dangling from his foot and the other lay nearby.

An unmarked police car and an emergency service vehicle parked alongside each other to shield the body from public view.

“He has been lying there since last night. No one went to help him. He died alone,” one emotional resident said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Thomas de Bruyn said the cause of death was unknown and that the man had yet to be identified. An inquest docket had been opened, he added.
