Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg has begun working on the next phase of the Rea Vaya rapid bus route, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) said on Thursday.

“We apologise for any disruption that commuters and residents may experience,” said JDA CEO, Thanduxolo Mendrew.

Affected roads are Empire and Joubert, Stanley, Kingsway, Perth, Commando, New Canada, and Main Street in Noordgesig.

The bus system would start running in the second half of the year.

The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) is a Johannesburg public transport system launched in August 2009 as an affordable transport alternative.

Work on the current phase of construction would involve creating a bus lane from one of the current traffic lanes, as well as setting up BRT traffic lights along the route. Mendrew said construction would not affect traffic too much. Residents in affected areas would be warned of any disruptions. - Sapa
