Johannesburg - Sanral distanced itself on Friday from allegations that Johannesburg metro police officers were threatening motorists with fines for not having e-tags.
“We have received complaints from people who are being pulled over, allegedly by the Johannesburg metro police, for entering the highway without e-tags, threatening a R500 fine,” SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.
“We suspect this is a bogus operation and reassure the e-tolled road users that it's not a Sanral initiative, nor that of our service provider.”
He urged road users to come forward and report the incidents.
“This is not acceptable. We would like people to phone our tip off number... to report any such incidents.”
The Johannesburg metro police could not be reached for comment.
The e-tolling of Gauteng highways started on Tuesday.
