Monday is going to be a sweltering 35ºC as Joburgers experience the first heatwave of the season.

Residents are going to have to bear with the heatwave at least until Tuesday, according to the SA Weather Service. The city can expect to suffer 35ºC on Monday.

Possible thundershowers are forecast for the region from Tuesday, which should cool things down a little.

“There is a 30 percent chance of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, and this will climb to 60 percent from Thursday onwards,” said SA Weather Service forecaster Karl Loots.

The recent weather is a typical example of a heatwave – when maximum temperatures are, for three days or more, 5ºC hotter than the average maximum temperatures of the hottest month.

In South Africa, January is that month, with an average maximum of 29ºC.

Pretoria is expecting temperatures of 36º, forecasters said.

Weather experts caution people to remember to put on sunscreen if they are venturing out into the sun on Monday and to wear a hat and drink lots of water.

The mercury is expected to drop below heatwave temperatures by the end of the week. - The Star
