Johannesburg - SA National Editors' Forum deputy chairman Makhudu Sefara has resigned from his position and his membership, the organisation said on Wednesday.

Sanef chair Mpumelelo Mkhabela accepted Sefara's resignation and thanked him for his service.

“Makhudu served Sanef and journalism with distinction, unyielding in the face of various threats to editorial independence,” he said in a statement.

Sefara resigned as The Star newspaper's editor in June.

At the time Sefara and Independent News and Media SA said his departure was amicable and mutually agreed upon.

Sefara indicated in a letter that an announcement about his future would be made in due course.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank you, members of mancom, council and the general membership for the trust and confidence you had in me,” he wrote in the letter.

“And, further, to express my appreciation for the opportunities extended to me to serve Sanef in whatever small capacity the organisation deemed necessary. I wish you and this very important organisation the very best for the future.” - Sapa
