Johannesburg - Two people died and two were seriously injured in a crash on the N1 in Midrand on Thursday morning.

This is one of three accidents that have claimed lives and caused injuries over the past 24 hours. According to ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring, two cars collided on the Samrand and Olifantsfontein offramps on the N1 south.

“On arrival, the paramedics found that one person on the scene had been pronounced dead. A second, in a critical condition, was taken to a hospital in Tembisa but was confirmed dead on arrival,” Meiring said.

Two others were seriously injured and have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police were still investigating the cause of the accident.

In a separate incident, a car caught fire on the M2 east before the Rissik Street exit just before 6am today.

“There were no injuries as the driver of the vehicle was able to jump out as it caught alight. We cordoned off the area, but it did cause heavy traffic delays in the area,” said Joburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

In another accident last night, 17 people were injured when a minibus taxi rolled on the N12 near Putfontein.

According to Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann, when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that a minibus had overturned and landed on its side.

“Upon assessment of the occupants, paramedics found that one person was in a critical condition and 16 others had sustained minor to serious injuries,” she said. The critically injured patient was airlifted to hospital.

“The remaining 16 patients were treated at the scene and transported to various hospitals for further medical treatment. Reports from the scene indicate that the minibus overturned as a result of a burst tyre,” she added.
