Johannesburg - The University of Johannesburg has been swamped with applications from matrics wanting to study there.
Fewer than one in 10 applicants will get a place.
And the university has reiterated that no walk-in applications will be considered.
“Over 111 200 applicants applied in 2014 for 2015 first-year graduate studies at UJ as opposed to nearly 72 000 for the 2014 intake.
“This reflects an increase of more than 39 000 applications compared to the previous year,” said Professor Kinta Burger, the UJ registrar.
“Admissions to UJ are competitive and the university can only admit a limited number of students. The planned intake of undergraduate first-year students for this year is capped at 10 500.
“This number of spaces available is in accordance with the formal enrolment plan approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training,” said Burger.
Don’t just turn up hoping for a space, the university warned.
“UJ does not accommodate any on-campus late applicants (walk-ins),” said Kinta.
“All enquiries regarding late applications, space availability or the change from one programme to another will be dealt with on our website via UJ’s late enquiry system or UJ’s call centre, 011 559 4555.”
The enquiry system is available from January 9 to 13.
Burger said UJ would review all the applications based on their final Grade 12 results from Tuesday until Thursday.
“All applicants will receive an SMS during this time which will confirm their final application status. If applicants have not received an SMS from UJ by Friday, they must visit the UJ website (www.uj.ac.za) to verify their application status, or call the UJ call centre (011 559 4555) for more information.”
