Johannesburg - You’ve just posted a picture of yourself and your friends standing outside your house on Facebook.

They, in turn, “check in” and tag as many people on the picture as they can. Better yet, you post a selfie on Instagram with the location of the restaurant you’re at.

These are just some common but potentially dangerous mistakes, according to a social media law expert.

Privacy and security dangers were heightened this week as the video of motorist Clive Naidoo’s altercation with a JMPD officer was posted on YouTube.

In the clip, Naidoo is seen talking to metro police officer Laurencia Shitlhelana who is writing up a fine after he allegedly skipped a red traffic light.

Upon seeing Naidoo is recording her, Shitlhelana spurs him on so “the media can see she is doing her job”.

The exchange is amusing and disturbing, but social media expert Emma Sadleir has another concern.

She says South Africans need to start being more careful with their personal information on public platforms
