Johannesburg - All home affairs offices across the country would be opened on the final registration drive this weekend, the Department of Home Affairs said on Saturday.
The offices woud be opened between 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday, to allow people apply for Identity Documents, said spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.
“The department is issuing identity documents, temporary identity certificates while encouraging those who have applied for ID's but have not collected them to do so during the weekend,” Mamoepa said.
Earlier on Saturday, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor visited the home affairs office in Harrison Street, Johannesburg, in support of the final voter registration weekend.
Senior managers from Pretoria as well as mobile units were also deployed in all provinces, to assist in the voter registration, Mamoepa said.
Green bar-coded ID books, as well as smart ID cards would be acceptable as legal forms of identity for purposes of registration and voting, Mamoepa said.
This comes as smart identity cards were rolled out to first-time applicants and pensioners last Saturday. Mamoepa urged first-time applicants who are 16 years old and pensioners who are 60 years and above, to collect their ID cards from home affairs offices.
He said that the smart ID's would take about ten days, from the date of the application to delivery, to be made available to applicants.
