The legacy of Nelson Mandela's life should be kept alive, Nelson Mandela Foundation chairman Professor Njabulo Ndebele said in paying tribute to the former president, who died on Thursday night.
“His legacy lives on in all of us - it is in our hands now,” he said in a statement released by the foundation early Friday morning.
“We know all South Africans and indeed the world join us in this profound sense of loss and sadness on the death of our beloved founder, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
“Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences are with the Mandela family and friends at this time.
“Let us stand together now and in the days ahead, and do what needs to be done to honour with dignity Tata Madiba.”
Ndebele called on South Africans to continue the good work he had done in his life.
“We know you share with many of us the same passionate wish to see Nelson Mandela's legacy being kept alive and made available to the world.”
Just before midnight on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela, 95, had died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg. - Sapa
