Johannesburg – Three woman were killed and nine others injured Wednesday evening in a freak accident in KwaZulu Natal, emergency services reported.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the accident occurred on the P134 district road in Howick. Initial indications were that an object from a passing truck may have struck passengers on the back of a bakkie.

“Paramedics, along with Provincial Services, responded to the scene and on their arrival, found a bakkie and large truck parked on the side of the road.”

Meiring said occupants that had been sitting on the back of the bakkie were found sitting around the vehicle.

“On assessment, paramedics found that three woman had sustained multiple, fatal injuries.”

Nothing could be done for the patients and they were declared dead on scene, Meiring said.

“Nine other patients that had been on the back of the vehicle had sustained minor injuries.”

Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and transported them to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Meiring said the patients later told the paramedics that the bakkie had passed the truck when the occupants were struck by an unidentified object which apparently came from the truck.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
