Durban – Two people were killed in Newcastle on Saturday when their motorbike collided with a car, traffic authorities said.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said initial indications were that the biker attempted to overtake the car at the same time as the car attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection of HJ Van Eck Drive and Allen Street.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Service spokesman Robert Mckenzie said three people in the car were injured and were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The two bikers, a woman and a man, were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
