Durban - The SPCA has urged parents to educate their children about using animals as target practice.

This comes after an incident in Kloof, Durban which saw a Hadeda bird shot with an arrow. The bird was treated by the SPCA but died due to the severity of its injuries.

“We received a call from a concerned member of the public who had seen an injured hadeda in their garden. Inspector Simamane and Trainee Inspector Nkomo responded to the call and went to investigate at the residence in Kloof. Upon arrival they saw two hadedas in the back garden and one of them was seriously injured,” said the SPCA's Lisa Gadd.

She said the arrow measuring 75cm in length had pieced the birds torso. Gadd said that the SPCA had a zero tolerance approach to animal cruelty.

“The Kloof and Highway SPCA urge parents to teach their children to be responsible when using their “toys” and not to use innocent animals as targets. The SPCA has a zero tolerance policy of animal cruelty and ask members of the public to report any cruelty that they witness,” said Gadd.
