Durban - Jeremy Clarkson is known for putting his foot in it, but yesterday he was given a lesson in how to behave with dignity by the parents of Reeva Steenkamp.

Clarkson plunged to a new low in his boorish behaviour when he made a sick joke about the murder of Steenkamp while taking part in his recent show in Joburg, which he and his co-presenters were forced to change to a “Clarkson, Hammond & May Live” tour, dropping the Top Gear branding after the BBC axed Clarkson for punching a producer of the programme.

Members of the audience made videos of the latest incident in Joburg and uploaded them to YouTube.

During the live show, Clarkson accidentally shoots an audience member with a paintball gun.

As the man is led away for treatment, Clarkson admits: “I thought he was a burglar”, and James May replies: “Was that a member of the audience you just shot in the bathroom? No? Then it can’t have been a burglar, then, can it?”

Oscar Pistorius told police he had thought his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was a burglar in the bathroom of his luxury house when he gunned her down on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

Yesterday, when The Independent on Saturday contacted the lawyer who has represented the Steenkamp family, Tania Koen, for comment, she said she had spoken to June Steenkamp and she had said they did not want to dignify the incident with a response.

Meanwhile, according to the British Sunday Times, Clarkson said he would be returning to TV to host a new show, and that Hammond and May would be joining him. Netflix, the US provider of online media streaming, is believed to have signed them up.
