Durban - Relief is on its way: Thursday’s scorching temperatures are not expected to last, with a cold front predicted for Friday.

With the mercury predicted to touch 34-35ºC in Durban and Ladysmith on Thursday and 37ºC in Pietermaritzburg, the weather bureau advises people to drink water and avoid hard work.

They also cautioned against outdoor activities or sports.

“Extremely high fire danger conditions” are expected in places in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as other provinces, while hot and humid conditions will result in “extremely uncomfortable conditions” over the eastern KZN.

Although such high temperatures were “not normal”, they were not unusual either as records showed these temperatures had been reached before, said Durban Weather Bureau forecaster, Wisani Maluleke, on Wednesday night.

Such high temperatures generally lasted about a day.

A cold front was expected and temperatures would drop tomorrow, but Maluleke said much rain was not expected.

“We are more dry than wet - and dryer than last year… and we are not expecting any good rain until December,” Maluleke said.

Forecasters predict a cloudy weekend, especially along the coast. Temperatures will recover again on Monday.
