Durban - Durban Mayor James Nxumalo said on Saturday that teams were working to restore power following electricity cuts that began in various areas on Christmas Day.

“We are very concerned about this situation and have asked officials to do what is necessary to prevent or limit the disruptions to the power supply,” said Nxumalo in a statement.

“I am pleased that power has been restored to some areas and the teams are working on all the outstanding areas.”

Nxumalo said that the electricity cuts and intermittent power supply were caused by “excessive heat... which caused medium voltage cable terminations to fail at our various substations”.

He also apologised for delays at the electricity call centre, explaining that the high volume of calls created long waiting periods.

The municipality would investigate how it could improve its service in this regard.

“Bear with the City as it tries to resolve the situation,” said Nxumalo. - Sapa
