Durban - A passenger in a taxi was killed, when the wheel and side shaft that came off a bakkie that was travelling in the same direction on Durban’s Southern Freeway, struck the taxi she was travelling in on Tuesday.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said the side shaft and tyre bounced off the bakkie before hitting the concrete median and bouncing up, with the side shaft penetrating one of the taxi’s side windows, fatally injuring the woman.

Three other people were injured and were taken to hospital for treatment.

They were described as having minor injuries.

Jamieson said there appeared to be no collision between the two vehicles.

Police were on scene investigating the accident.
