The future of the eThekwini municipality’s head of health, Nomakhosi Gxagxisa, will be decided in November when the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) meets.

However, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union said the matter of Gxagxisa’s appointment had dragged on for too long and it would not let up on the issue until the municipality had corrected its blunder.

Deputy health and social services manager Musa Gumede said the HPCSA had indicated that Gxagxisa’s matter would be tabled at its registration committee meeting on November 29.

In August, it told the municipality that Gxagxisa should be suspended until she registered with the council.

It gave the municipality the advice on July 28, but almost three months later Gxagxisa is still in her job.

In July, the local government bargaining council gave the city three months to fix its blunder in employing Gxagxisa, who is not registered with the council as is required for the post.

The union also lodged a complaint about her appointment, saying she should be fired.

Municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said the municipality would wait for the outcome of the November 29 HPCSA meeting before proceeding further. The Mercury
