Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police were attacked by four men while patrolling the N2 Highway in Durban on Tuesday.

The officers from the SAPS provincial task team noticed a blue VW polo parked on the side of the highway with nobody inside the vehicle.

When they stopped to investigate, four armed men approached the vehicle and opened fire on them.

According to police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, police responded by firing back resulting in two of the suspects being wounded. No policemen were injured in the attack.

“The injured suspects were taken to hospital where they remain under police guard. Two 9mm pistols were recovered at the scene. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in other crimes,” said Major Zwane.

It has been established that the car did not belong to any of the four suspects.

The suspects will appear in court soon to face charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
