Durban - Seven people – including four children – were killed when two cars crashed between Dundee and Pomeroy on Sunday night.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (KZN EMS) spokesman, Robert McKenzie, said the accident happened about 7km from Dundee, at 6.40pm.
“Six people died at the scene, four of them children.”
A seventh victim died in hospital today, a source said.
Three people were treated for critical injuries, while five others sustained serious injuries.
It is unclear where the victims were going, or travelling from.
It was one of a number of serious accidents that the KZN EMS responded to at the weekend.
In the Ugu health district, on the R612 between Umzinto and Ixopo, at about 7pm on Saturday, an accident involving a light motor vehicle left two people dead.
“Paramedics treated another 10 patients on the scene. Once stabilised, they were taken to GJ Crookes Hospital.”
McKenzie said that while the paramedics from the Umzinto base were attending to this accident, the Port Shepstone-based medics were treating a patient on the N2, who had been knocked by a motor vehicle, at Boboyi, near Port Shepstone.
“The patient was seriously injured and taken to hospital.”
In Dundee, at the intersection of Victoria and Wilson streets, at about 7.45pm on Saturday, a collision between a car and a motorcycle left two people injured.
They were treated and taken to Dundee hospital.
In the Durban metro area, a man died after being hit by a vehicle in Dumisane Makhaye Road in KwaMashu, and a child was critically injured after being hit by a vehicle in the Newlands West area.
McKenzie said that there had been several incidents in the north of the province, in the Uthungulu and Zululand health districts.
“At about 6pm on Saturday in the Mbilane area near Ulundi, a collision between two bakkies, on the R66, left 10 people injured.”
He said that early on Sunday, on the R34 towards Jabulani in the Empangeni area, a collision between a truck and a light motor vehicle caused two more fatalities and left a person critically injured.
The patient was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.
Before 6am on Sunday, on the R66 near the Mbilane bridge, an accident involving a bakkie left one person dead and another 10 people injured.
