Durban - A three-year-old girl drowned in the pool at her family home in Salt Rock, north of Durban, on Monday evening.
The small community woke up to the devastating news on Tuesday that the girl, from a well-known family in the area, had drowned the previous evening.
Colonel Jackie Papayya of the Umhlali SAPS confirmed that the girl’s mother (whose name is known to IOL) was in the kitchen cooking when her daughter fell into their uncovered residential pool and drowned.
Netcare 911 paramedics on the scene worked for an hour and 45 minutes to try and resuscitate the child but to no avail.
Papayya has sent out a warning to other families to be vigilant.
“As a mother this tragedy is heartbreaking," she said.
Police are still investigating.
