Johannesburg - A man drowned at a beach in Durban on Friday, provincial emergency services said.

“Paramedics responded to an incident where a large freak wave pummelled swimmers on Wedge beach, at Durban's North beach,” spokesman Robert Mckenzie said in a statement.

“Sadly one person has died, despite paramedics from a private ambulance service attempting to resuscitate him.”

Forty people, who had been in the same surf zone when the wave washed in, were treated for minor injuries at the beach. - Sapa
