Durban - Lectures were disrupted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus on Monday because of student protests.

University spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said “a small percentage” of students took part in the demonstrations.

“It is of grave concern that a small percentage of students are continuing to embark on destructive and violent protests. Management condemns the destruction to property and the violent nature of the protests,” he said.

Registration for students closed on Friday, but there had been calls to extend the deadline to allow some of them to find the money to register. Seshoka said all students had been informed of the registration deadlines well in advance.

“Students who required financial aid and met the university's entrance requirements have been supported.”
