Durban - A Durban man who survived a suspected rock-throwing incident early on Tuesday has warned motorists to be alert on the highways.

Fortunately for Haridas Naidoo, manager of eThekwini municipality’s pension fund, when an object - believed to be a rock - was thrown on to his Mercedes-Benz C Class just before 7am, the M4 highway northbound was quiet.

“I was driving slowly and just before I passed the steel bridge on the M4 I heard a loud bang on my windscreen and swerved, but fortunately there was no car nearby and I managed to drive on till I got to the Florence Mkhize Building,” he said.

Naidoo said he felt lucky that his windscreen had multi-layered glass. He said had the rock struck his sunroof, it would have been “catastrophic”.

“I want to alert people to be more vigilant. It could have been catastrophic if it had hit the windscreen lower because there is less glass or if it came through the sunroof,” he said.

Police confirmed the incident had been reported.
