Johannesburg - A pregnant woman in her 20s was seriously injured after she was pinned underneath a truck in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, ER24 said on Tuesday.

“ER24 paramedics along with rescue services responded to the scene and found a large tipper truck lying on its side in the middle of the road. The cargo of sand had been spilled across the road.

Paramedics found a female lying trapped, from the waist down, beneath the cab of the vehicle,” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring.

“Assessments showed that the woman, who was also heavily pregnant, had sustained severe crush injuries to both of her legs,” said Meiring.

Meiring said that rescue equipment, including a backhoe, was used to free the woman in an operation that took over an hour. Paramedics stabilised the woman at the scene and she was transported to hospital.

The cause of the accident was not known, and authorities were on the scene, conducting investigations.
