Durban - Six people were killed when a car collided with a truck on the N11 near Ladysmith on Wednesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal emergency services said.

KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial Emergency Medical Service spokesman Robert McKenzie said that apart from the four women and two men who died, three people were also injured.

A woman from the car was in a critical condition while a man from the truck was in a serious condition. The second occupant of the truck sustained minor injuries. The injured were taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said that paramedics and officials were still on the scene trying to extricate the dead after 8am.

She said that initial indications were that the Toyota Cressida had failed to stop at the intersection where the road to Driefontein meets the N11, between Ladysmith and Newcastle. As a result it drove under the truck.

Mngomezulu said they were conducting a stop-and-go on the N11 after the road was initially closed.
