Durban - Northern parts of Durban will experience major road interruptions over the next two months while urgently needed bulk water infrastructure is being constructed, the eThekwini Municipality has said.

Head of eThekwini Water and Sanitation, Ednick Msweli, said although a large portion of the pipeline had been routed through sugar cane fields, a critical portion crossed busy residential areas.

Two main projects that fell under the R250 million Northern Aqueduct Augmentation project, including a 6km segment of the pipeline beginning at Duffs Road and ending at the Phoenix 2 reservoir, and a 22km segment of the pipeline stretching from the Phoenix 2 reservoir to Waterloo, Umhlanga and a planned new Blackburn reservoir, were to be completed by the end of the year, Msweli said.

The Phoenix Highway from Longbury Road, crossing to the Grove End traffic lights, would be narrowed to one lane on both the east- and west-bound carriageways.

The inner right lanes on either side of the highway along Eastbury Drive would also be narrowed to a single lane on the east and west bound.

Longbury Drive at Vista-croft Place and Uppercroft Road, as well as Eastbury Drive, will be closed from May 11 until May 20.

Road users were urged to be cautious on Croftbury Drive, Eastbury Drive, Ridgecroft Drive and Herrencroft Drive as there would be heavy construction vehicles.

Pricklepear Road in Waterloo would have the left hand lane closed, leaving only the right hand lane for traffic.

In mid September, segments of Mgabadeli Road would be closed for three months.

In October, Umaquawe Road would be closed to traffic and residents near the immediate construction sites.

Traffic would be controlled through road signage, detours would be in place and flagmen would be available, said the municipality.
