Durban - The ANC's leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, including the province's premier Senzo Mchunu, attended a church service in honour of former president Nelson Mandela at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome on Sunday.

A prayer was said and Mandela's image was displayed across the stage, followed by the singing of the national anthem.

Outside the Durban City Hall there were two books for those wishing to pay tribute to Mandela and leave their condolences.

One of those who signed the book was Muntiwhetu Qwabe, former member of Umkhonto we Sizwe's security and intelligence section who became a part of the police's VIP protection unit.

“You know I was to protect this person, and he asks me how I am, how my family was.”

He said that with other VIPs he was assigned to protect “we were just doing our job, but he would be in a picture with you. I have a picture of him and me in my car. You should see it”.

Qwabe said he had mixed emotions about Mandela's passing. “I think it is a relief, but I have a sadness.” - Sapa
