The remains of South African victims of a plane that crashed in Libya in May have been brought home, the department of international relations said on Thursday.

Most of the remains were identified using dental records and fingerprints, with the co-operation of the Disaster Victim Identification Authority in the Netherlands, Interpol and the SA Police Service, said department spokesman Saul Kgomotso Molobi.

Afriqiyah Air Flight 771 crashed near Tripoli on May 12, killing an estimated 103 people.

Molobi would not say how many South Africans died, explaining only that he had been instructed not to do so by the department. - Sapa
