Polokwane - Five people died and two others were seriously injured when two cars collided in Polokwane on Friday morning, Limpopo police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said the accident happened at the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Landros Mare streets at around 4:30am.

She said a VW Golf and a Toyota Corolla were involved in the accident.

“At this stage it is not yet clear as to what happened but the possibility that one of the vehicles might have ignored a red light is being investigated,” said Otto.

No further details were immediately available.
