Johannesburg -

Five people died and one was injured when an ambulance and a car collided in Lebowakgomo, south of Polokwane, the Limpopo health department said on Friday.

“Five people died and (were) burnt beyond recognition when a planned patient transport vehicle (PPT) collided with a sedan in Lebowakgomo on Thursday,” spokesman Macks Lesufi said in a statement.

“Three occupants of the sedan and two in the PPT vehicle were declared dead on the scene as a result of this terrible accident.

The driver of the PPT vehicle was rushed to hospital.”

The people involved in the accident were still being identified and police were investigating.

The department said it regretted the loss of life, and it cautioned motorists to exercise vigilance on the roads to prevent fatalities as the festive season approaches. - Sapa
