Johannesburg - The driver of a bakkie which hit and killed 10 people cutting up a dead hippopotamus outside Tzaneen, was among the five injured, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

The driver was in hospital, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Earlier, he said police had tracked the owner of the bakkie, but not the driver. It was initially not known if the driver had been killed, injured, or was on the run.

Eight people were killed on the scene and two died on the way to hospital when they were hit on Saturday evening near Nkambako village outside Tzaneen.

The injured were taken to the Lethaba and Van Velden Hospitals.

The group found the dead animal, which had been hit by a truck, on the side of the road and were cutting up the carcass when they were struck. - Sapa
