Police have arrested a Germiston man after he placed a device in a supermarket and made a bomb threat.

Police spokesperson Annaline Prinsloo said the man, in his 20s, had last night placed "part of a type of bomb" in a supermarket in the same building as his flat, and called the police at 8.06pm.

Within minutes of the call, in which the man claimed involvement in the Soweto blasts early on Wednesday, police descended on his home.

The device was found in the supermarket. Experts examined it and "were certain that it would never go off".

Prinsloo said the man was not yet being connected with the Soweto bombings.

"At this stage we are not even talking of Soweto. We think this is a hoax," she said. - Own correspondent
