Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela will live on through those who practice his ideals, Greenpeace said in a statement on Friday.

“Tata Madiba’s legacy will live on in all those who share his commitment to changing the world for the better, to achieve a socially just society which has human rights and dignity at its core,” spokeswoman Fiona Musana said in a statement.

Just before midnight on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma, in a televised announcement, said the Nobel laureate had died peacefully in his family's company at around 8.50pm.

Musana said the environmental group's thoughts were with Mandela's family, friends, and comrades.

“By demonstrating the power of activism, Madiba inspired people across the world to stand up for their beliefs, and through his wisdom and commitment to peace, he inspired hope.”
