Nelspruit - Eight people were killed and seven injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned near Settlers on Tuesday, the Mpumalanga department of community safety said.

“It is believed that the accident happened when the minibus taxi driver lost control of his vehicle,” said spokesman Joseph Mabuza.

“The vehicle overturned killing eight people instantly, including the driver.”

Seven critically injured people were rushed to Mmametlhake Hospital.

The accident happened around 3pm on the D2740 between Seabe and Nokaneng.

Police were investigating the accident.

“The MEC (Vusi Shongwe) regrets any loss of lives due to road crashes and he can only appeal to road users to drive with great caution,” Mabuza said.
