Johanensburg - The Media Review Network (MRN) has condemned the publication of the French caricatures in a magazine ridiculing the Prophet Mohammed. “These caricatures fuel an already widespread rage felt by Muslims around the world,” MRN researcher Ibrahim Vawda said on Friday.
Vawda said pictures published by the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo were inflammatory and an attack on the Muslim community.
He criticised the French government for closing down its embassy and preventing peaceful protests.
“Such actions beg the question, is freedom of speech a right reserved for some and not for others?” Vawda asked.
The French caricatures disregard the religious beliefs of 1,6 billion Muslims, he said.
“Furthermore, it marks the demise of mutual respect, and seeks only to divide our communities.
“We make a further call on the French Government to take proactive steps to prevent Islamophobic attacks of this nature,” Vawda said.
