IOL reader Sean Fourie shares his story of the day he and his family met Nelson Mandela.

We were very lucky to get an audience with Tata Madiba on the 17th of July in 2010.

My daughter, Sharne' Fourie, shares a birthday with Madiba which she is very proud of.

I was listening radio SAFM in the 16th of December 2010 when Chief Mandla was talking about the children that was going to visit with Madiba the next day. I send a SMS to the station saying that my daughter's dream was to meet Mr Mandela and asked if it was at all possible. Chief Mandla was gracious enough to arrange our meeting.

We will always cherish this memory and will remain indebted to Chief Mandla Mandela for making this possible.

Madiba will always be close in our hearts and our hearts pain at his passing. Through our faith we know that we will overcome this and that we will celebrate his life and the impact that he had on us and the world. For now we mourn with our fellow South Africans and with the world.

In gratitude for what our predecessors have done for us, especially the role that Madiba played in making our country free.

Sean and Sharne' Fourie
