Johannesburg - An app containing thousands of quotes from former president Nelson Mandela has been launched, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Thursday.

“The Nelson Mandela Foundation has developed and launched the authorised Nelson Mandela Quotations app to bring Madiba’s words to the palm of your hand,” the organisation said.

“The quotes have been drawn from “Nelson Mandela by Himself: The Authorised Book of Quotations” published in 2011.”

The quotes were also drawn from Mandela’s official papers, speeches, recorded interviews, letters, diary extracts and impromptu remarks over a period of 63 years.

The app is available in a free version and a paid for premium version. The free version sends a daily quote to users.

“The premium version grants subscribers access to a database of thousands of Mandela quotes, ranging from the value of children and importance of education through to reflections on forgiveness to condemnations of injustice and discrimination - in addition to getting the quote of the day. It also allows you to search for a quotation to suit any occasion”, the statement said.

The premium version costs US$4,99 or R69,62 at the current exchange rate. Both versions are available on the Android and IOS platforms.

The foundation’s director of communications Neeran Naidoo said the late statesman remained an inspiration.

“Nelson Mandela’s writings and words are timeless and resonate around the world. We’ve made it easy to access the quote from the palm of your hand, wherever you may be,” he said.

“The app ensures that Nelson Mandela’s words will be documented for generations to come. I hope that the quotes continue to serve as an inspiration to all generations, now and into the future.”
