Rustenburg - Best performing housing contractors in the North West province will be recognised in Taung, the provincial government said on Wednesday.

“As a department responsible for provision of housing in the province, we have always called for excellent workmanship by our contractors in building of houses to our people. Those who have pushed boundaries as they strive for such excellence will be recognised in the event. We only reward excellence not anything else,” said Human Settlement MEC Collen Maine.

The main purpose of the awards is to promote and re-enforce a culture of excellence within the housing sector in the delivery of integrated human settlements and to encourage all stakeholders in the sector to respond systematically and foster a culture of producing quality housing.

Contractors would compete in 12 categories. The overall winner of each category in the provincial competition would participate in the national Govan Mbeki Awards competition.

The awards would for the first time take place in a rural village of Manthe in Taung.

“The hosting of the event in a rural village is in line with premier Supra Mahumapelo’s call for departments to spend most of its resources and host events meetings in villages, townships and small dorpies (towns) in an effort to fight unemployment, poverty and inequality and also grow local economies,” said Maine.
