Reustenburg - The school democracy week, aimed at educating pupils about democratic values and electoral process was launched in Christiana, North West, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Wednesday.

“The schools democracy week seeks to encourage, educate and empower learners to understand and participate in the democratic processes of the country and ultimately contribute to the deepening constitutional democracy,” said Tumelontle Thiba, head of the IEC in the North West.

“The schools democracy week is a critical component of the schools democracy programme, as it has the specific intention to increase youth participation in electoral democracy and to institutionalise electoral democracy content into the curriculum.”

She said the school democracy week would be implemented in all 19 municipalities of the North West province from April 20 to 27. Over 150 schools would be visited.

The week was launched at the Christiana School of the Blind on Monday. Thiba said Christiana School of the Blind was chosen to pay specific attention to the disability sector and to introduce the Braille voter education material to pupils.
