Rustenburg – The cleanest and dirtiest landfill sites in the North West province were located in the Naledi municipal area, civil rights group AfriForum said on Thursday.

Local co-ordinator for AfriForum in Vryburg, Alta Swart, said North West’s cleanest landfill site was in Vryburg, and the second dirtiest landfill site was in Stella. Both fall within the Naledi municipal boundary.

“These landfill sites were audited by AfriForum in their National Landfill Site Audit, which recently reached conclusion. The landfill site in Vryburg is the only one in North West which met legal requirements,” said Swart.

“Unfortunately, the badly managed landfill site in Stella is shedding a shadow over Vryburg’s achievement. Stella’s landfill site poses a health risk to residents. It’s not fenced, the rubbish does not get covered and compacted, and man and animal are always present, searching for things that could be of value.”

She said AfriForum sent a letter of demand to the municipality, requesting their urgent attention at the site.

“At a meeting with the municipality, AfriForum was ensured that the site would be fenced within a week. If we do not see action, we will clean up the site ourselves and recover the expenses from the municipality.”
