Potchefstroom - All learners of the North West Secondary School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad would be relocated to Rustenburg, North West Education MEC Wendy Matsemela said on Tuesday.

“These learners were moved to schools in Wolmaranstad. The boys were moved to Wolmaranstad High School and the girls to Daeraad Special School. This was due to the available space at the school,” she said.

Matsemela said the learners would now be relocated to Kutlwanong School for the Deaf in Rustenburg because the schools where they have been moved to was not friendly to their condition.

“They are confined and restricted to a small area. We want to take them to a school where their need will be catered for.”

The learners were taken to Daeraad Special School and Wolmaranstad High School after a fire ripped through the girls’ hostel at the North West Secondary School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad on August 24.

Three girls were killed and 54 others admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries sustained when they jumped from the first floor to the ground floor to escape the blaze.

Dinah Koli, 18, Katlego Diseko, 16, and Emily Oageng,22, were trapped in the hostel and died in the blaze. They were buried at their respective homes at the weekend.
