Rustenburg - The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in North West has completed the water reticulation project at Pomfret at the cost of R13 million, mayor Choganyetso Elvis Tladinyane said on Thursday.

“This project has addressed the network leakages and our people will have access to clean water over a longer period,” he said in delivering the 2015/2016 budget speech.

He said the implementation of the rural sanitation programme was completed at the end of December 2014 and the additional funding to proceed with the provision of ventilated improved pits (VIP) was under consideration.

“Since January 2012, the sanitation programme has benefited 10,822 house-holds and the total wages paid to our people is R8.8miliion.”

He said a bulk water feasibility study to determine the availability of ground water in the Kagisano Molopo local municipal area was ongoing.

“ At this stage the establishment of new boreholes with high yields to augment the current supply is being investigated and testing of water quality and quantity on the existing boreholes is in progress.

“The implementation of rural water supply programme is ongoing with delays due to the water availability and quality challenges in the villages of Kgokgojane, Pouval and Madinonyane. The water supply project in Tosca at the contract value of R6.5million has commenced.”

He said in the Greater Taung local municipality, the district municipality had completed the provision of water to Cokonyane Village, through the rural water supply programme, at a cost of R8.6 million and the bulk water supply at Choseng Village funded under the Municipality Water Infrastructure Grant (MWIG) had been completed at an amount of R8.3million.

He said the refurbishment of Bloemhof water treatment works and would be completed in June at the cost of R22million while the upgrading of the Bloemhof raw water abstraction point would be completed in June 2015 at a cost of R46million.

The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality is made up of five local municipalities, namely Greater Taung, Naledi, Mamusa, Lekwa-Teemane and Kagisano-Molopo. It was named after liberation veteran Ruth Mompati who died earlier this month at the age of 89.
