Mahikeng - North West premier Supra Mahumapelo expressed sadness at the death of 10 people in a road accident near Atamelang, his office said on Monday.

“On behalf of the provincial government and the people of our province, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who died in this tragic accident,” he said in a statement.

North West police said the 10 were killed and three critically injured when two cars collided near Atamelang, outside Mahikeng, on Sunday night.

“Three people are in a critical condition in hospital,” Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said.

She said some of the people died at the scene and others in hospital, but it was not yet clear how many people died at the scene.

A Toyota single cab bakkie with nine occupants and a Volkswagen Golf with four occupants collided. The VW Golf was travelling to Delareyville and the Toyota towards Atamelang.

The cause of the accident was not yet known. Police opened a culpable homicide case.

Mahumapelo said he was worried by the number of fatal accidents on the province's roads.

In September, 15 people were killed on the N18 between Taung and Magogong. A woman died last month in a head-on-collision on the N4 near Rustenburg, during which a member of the provincial legislature was seriously injured.
